How to Check if a Photo Is Real or Fake (Free Guide, 2026)

A refund photo of a spilled biryani, a property listing that looks too perfect, a degree certificate in your HR inbox — at some point everyone asks the same question: is this photo real? Here is a practical way to check if a photo is real or fake in under a minute, plus what each clue actually means.

The 30-second answer: use a fake photo checker

The fastest way to test whether a photo is real or fake is to run it through a photo checker that looks at things your eyes can't: hidden metadata, compression patterns and the statistical fingerprints AI generators leave behind.

  1. 1Open popped.info on your phone or computer.
  2. 2Drop the photo in (JPG, PNG, WEBP or iPhone HEIC up to 10 MB) or paste it with Ctrl/⌘+V.
  3. 3Read the verdict — Original, Photoshopped or AI = Popped! — and the plain-English reasons under it.
  4. 4Open "Detection factors" to see every check that ran, and the heatmap to see where edits are suspected.

How to check if a photo is original or not (manually)

No single check is proof, so combine several:

  • Look at the metadata (EXIF). Real phone photos usually carry the camera model, date, exposure and lens. Editing apps often add their name ("Adobe Photoshop", "PicsArt", "Canva"). AI generators may add their own tags. Missing metadata is NOT suspicious on its own — WhatsApp removes it from every photo.
  • Zoom into edges and text. Pasted or retyped areas often have sharper, cleaner edges than the rest of the picture, or text that sits slightly "on top" of the paper.
  • Check light and shadows. Shadows that point in different directions, or an object without a shadow, are classic signs of a composite.
  • Search for the picture. A reverse image search (Google Lens) shows if the same photo appeared online before — a common trick in refund and listing fraud.
  • Look for AI tells. Melted text, extra fingers, warped jewellery, too-smooth skin or food that looks like a 3D render point to an AI-generated image.

What a fake photo test can and cannot tell you

Automated detectors are very good at screening, but they give probabilities, not proof. Every AI detector misses some AI images and occasionally flags a real photo. Treat a "Photoshopped" or "AI = Popped!" verdict as a reason to look closer — ask for a second photo, a short video, or the original file — before you accuse anyone. An "Original" verdict means no strong signs of editing or AI were found, not that the photo is guaranteed genuine.

Why WhatsApp photos don't look "fake" to Popped!

WhatsApp strips metadata and re-compresses every photo, which naive detectors mistake for editing. Popped! recognises WhatsApp-style compression and treats it as neutral, so honest customers who forward a photo are not penalised.

Quick checklist: photo real or fake?

  • Run it through a real or fake photo checker (popped.info).
  • Read the reasons, not just the badge.
  • Check metadata for editing apps or AI tools — but ignore simply missing EXIF.
  • Zoom into text, edges and shadows.
  • Reverse-search the image.
  • When the stakes are high, ask for another photo or a live video.
